Learn how to do the double treble crochet stitch with this easy photo tutorial. (Known as a treble if you’re in the USA). When I first started crocheting doubles and trebles seemed pretty common, but it was a while before I came across the double treble stitch. It’s a tall stitch so great for creating an open weave effect and once you get into a rhythm is quick and easy to work.
Double treble crochet (dtr) – UK terms
Treble crochet (tr) – US terms
In the tutorial below I have already worked a row of double crochet (dc), or single crochet in US terms, but you can work a dtr into the top of any stitch or straight into your starting chain.
Here’s how you do the dtr stitch:
To carry on from a foundation row chain 4 (as shown in photo below), or if you are working into a starting chain, work into the 5th chain from your hook.
- Wrap yarn around the hook twice:
2. Insert the hook into the stitch, wrap yarn around the hook and pull through the stitch – you will have four loops on your hook:
3. Wrap yarn around the hook and pull through the first two loops – you will now have three loops on your hook:
4. Wrap yarn around the hook and pull through the first two loops – you will now have two loops left on your hook:
5. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through the final two loops to complete the stitch:
And you’ve created one double treble (dtr) crochet stitch! Continue to the end of your row, then turn your work, chain 4 as the first dtr, then carry on working the dtr stitch, as below:
I hope you find this useful. The double treble crochet stitch is used in my blossom infinity scarf pattern, take a look here. Let me know what you’re making with the double treble stitch.
Happy crocheting!
